Europe Achieves a Key Milestone with the Europe’s First Out-of-Order RISC-V Processor chip, with the eProcessor Project

Oct 7, 2025 | News

The eProcessor Project has announced the successful development of Europe's first out-of-order RISC-V processor silicon, manufactured in a 22nm process. The processor supports out-of-order execution, runs Linux, and is designed for applications in automotive, AI, and high-performance computing. Cortus served as the primary contributor, leading the architecture, design, and silicon implementation of the 4-way Out-of-Order RISC-V core. The project, backed by partners including BSC, Chalmers University, Thales, and others, aligns with the EU Chips Act and Europe's broader push for semiconductor sovereignty. Project lead Lluc Alvarez of BSC called it "a quantum leap in RISC-V processing technology," noting that the initiative exceeded its technical objectives and lays the groundwork for a full-stack European open-source hardware ecosystem.
